SIGs

The Forum has recently established four special interest groups (SIGs):

The
LTE and WIMAX groups focus on the challenges posed by deployment of next generation mobile technologies.  This includes ensuring that both LTE and WIMAX standards include suitable provision for femtocells.  The groups also investigate how femtocells affect the deployment model for such networks:  the ability to build next generation networks around femtocells, rather than adding them in afterwards, provides several major advantages.

The Interoperability group provides clarity on how, where and when interoperability testing will take place. The great standards progress that has been made within the 3GPP and other bodies means that we will begin to see the first standardized femtocells and gateways appear soon. It is crucial that these new products undergo full interoperability testing to ensure that operators can deploy them safe in the knowledge that they will function effectively and in accordance with the standards.

The Services group investigates emerging services for consumers and is focused on the need to develop consensus with the industry around common approaches, such as standard APIs, to ensure that they will work across all equipment. Such services take advantage of the ‘presence’ capabilities of femtocells and the ability to easily connect mobile phone users to the home network and the web. For example, by allowing mobiles to join the home network, consumers can control and exchange data and media between the handset and local PCs, media centres or wireless enabled digital cameras and MP3 players.
